Jobless Recovery

The internet age is certainly finding new ways to tax individual morality. If Les MisÃ©rables were written today, would Jean Valjean be going to jail for downloading mp3s?

Yesterday at ComicBook.com, Russ Burlingame explored the possible meanings of the scribblings seen in Justice League Dark #14. While Burlingame may be concerned about what they mean, I'm far more interested in who wrote them!

Taking What They're Giving

Earlier this week, I was asked whether I ever downloaded comic books from peer-to-peer networks. I admitted that yes, I did occasionally download books, but only back issues that were several years old. My friend -- who happens to be a parole officer -- asked me why I limited myself to out-of-date books, pointing out that Booster Gold wouldn't bother with such restrictions.

Obviously, comic book publishers are in business to sell comic books. They need us to buy their product, and have every right to defend their business by enforcing their copyrighted material. If we all take their comics for free from the internet, eventually there will no longer be any new DC comics.

However, if you buy a comic that you really enjoy, the publishers would want you to share that experience with your friends in the hopes of selling comics to them too. How is sharing comics peer-to-peer any different than passing your floppies to your friends over the kitchen table each week?

It's different because when you're sharing a physical copy with a friend, you're temporarily giving someone a single copy of a single book--the very copy you've paid for. Uploading it to a peer-to-peer site means that dozens or hundreds or thousands of people can download it and keep it permanently, while you retain the copy you paid for. People compare it to theft but it's more like counterfeiting.

Grab it, try it and if you like it, than buy the damn thing.

Of course Nu52 DC makes me think that death is more merciful, not to mention the fact that most of those Nu52 comic books are not worth their price.

For the record, I just bought JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #14 at Comixology.com. (Booster appears in 1 panel on page 17. I'll add it to the database when I get that part working again.) This was my first digital comic book purchase. It was wildly unsatisfying. Why would anyone want to counterfeit this experience? Floppies for me!

I think it's just a question of your mileage may vary. I'm excited now that DC releases stuff to the Nook, since I like their interface much more than ComiXology's.

Well, you have to agree that nothing beats holding an actual comics book in your hands, and it's the same price too!

Now if you excuse me, I have to check if there's JLD#14 available in my comics store, not that anybody actually buys Nu52 stuff.

There have been 2854 blog entries since January 2010.
